Why Modem exists, and who builds it.

The name

In the nineties, a modem connected your computer to the Internet. Today the useful direction is the other one: giving your agents a computer of their own, out there.

The problem

CLI agents became the way a lot of us work. They are also stubbornly tied to the laptop: it has to stay open and awake, the terminal has to stay alive, several of them at once fight over the same machine, and a task that needs an hour needs an hour of you not closing the lid.

Renting a VM does not fix it: you inherit provisioning, SSH, runtimes, secrets, and remembering to turn the thing off. The need is not a server. It is a computer per project, that persists, that sleeps on its own, and that you reach in one command.

The position

Modem is deliberately not an agent, not a model, and not a hosting provider. It orchestrates the tools you already have: your agents, your subscriptions, your Git, your terminal. Whatever agents win, they will run on a computer: and that is the layer we build.

Who

Modem is built by Dominique Giancani at Fabrique Studio, in Paris. It started as a tool for one person with too many agents and one laptop, and it is being opened up carefully: a handful of alpha users, invited one at a time.
